The five o'clock rule

By Helen Marsh, Money and operations1 min read

A closed laptop with a yellow sticky note on its lid, long afternoon shadows on lime paper

When we started Punchcard, we worked like every small team works: late, a little panicked, proud of it. Then one of us burned out and we made a rule. At five, we stop.

What happened

We shipped less in the first month. Then we shipped more than ever, because the work we did between nine and five got sharper. Meetings got shorter. Decisions got made before lunch.

What it did to the app

The rule changed Punchcard too. That’s why the reminders are gentle, why there’s no “productivity score”, and why the weekly report shows the hours you didn’t work as a good thing.

Try it for a week

Set a stop time in your settings. Punchcard will remind you once, politely, and then leave you alone. See what happens.

One email a month with the new post and what we shipped. Unsubscribe whenever.
